The Outsider Art Fair: 25 Years
The Outsider Art Fair: 25 Years
OAF 2017 New York runs with special events January 19–22
New York. The Outsider Art Fair in New York presents its 25th edition at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea in January, featuring works from sixty international galleries as well as a curated space. To celebrate the 25 years of the Fair, a special event will honour nine galleries exhibiting who also participated in the first Fair in 1993. Raw Vision will be exhibiting and selling intricate chewing gum artworks from the streets of London by Ben Wilson and matchstick carvings from the plains of India by Pradeep Kumar.

As the Outsider Art Fair marks a major anniversary, there is assembled this „The Outsider Art Fair: 25 Years“, a booth that shows its history, with one work of art representing each year of its impressive run to date. This exhibition also honors the artists, dealers and other exhibitors, collectors and art enthusiasts who over the years have contributed to the special energy and atmosphere of this international Outsider Art Fair and helped make it an ever more popular, enduring success. On January 18, 6.30–8.30 pm, a talk titled "From Obscurity to Prominence: The Discovery and Stewardship of Outsider Art" will be held at The New Museum (235 Bowery, New York, NY 10012).

The Discovery and Stewardship of Outsider Art
Panel at The New Museum, N.Y.
New York. Managing an artist´s career or estate is a difficult task that requires extreme sensitivity and diverse business skills. Often, outsider artists present dealers and scholars with a somewhat unique quandary of management and interpretation, as the artists are either dead when their work is discovered, or have a limited ability to talk about themselves an the meaning of their art.

On January 18th (6:30pm) 2017 a panel discussion "From Obscurity to Prominence: The Discovery and Stewardship of Outsider Art" at The New Museum in New York, 235 Bowery, brings together three specialists that have been tasked with navigating this terrain, to talk about the ways in which they have helped to shape our vision of these artists´ legacies who were not able to shape it themselves. They will discuss both the rewards and potential pitfalls of this kind of stewardship, and how the work of these remarkable artists impacted their lives.

Moderator is Chris Wiley, artist, writer and curator. His essays have appeared in nu-merous exhibition catalogs and magazines including Kaleidoscope, Mousse, and Frieze, where he is a contributing editor. His artwork has appeared in exhibitions at MoMA PS1, Hauser & Wirth, and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery. He has curated exhibi-tions at numerous venues including Marianne Boesky Gallery and Maccarone Gal-lery. Panelists are: Karen Patterson (Curator, John Michael Kohler Arts Center), Ma-rion Harris (Owner, Marion Harris Gallery) and Tom di Maria (Director, Creative Growth Art Center since 2000). Founded over 40 years ago, the Center is the oldest and largest art center in the world for people with disabilities. Tom talks about Judith Scott.
